Beginning life as part of the British garrisons and colonial units, the modern Australian Army began to take shape during the Second Boer War in South Africa in 1899 when soldiers from all around the country were brought together to serve in the Australian Regiment.
After Federation in 1901, the troops were transferred into the new Australian Army. Since then, our brave diggers have gained recognition around the world as bravely overcoming odds, and often larger and better-equipped forces in all sorts of heart-breaking circumstances and terrain. The Aussie diggers have been a foundation of our national identity since they stormed ashore at Gallipoli in 1915 and still proudly serve our nation around the world, often in difficult peacekeeping circumstances.
